Autumn is the best time to plant in Canberra for most plant species.

  • Plant roots grow in the relatively warmer soil and in general, plants face more favourable establishment conditions during autumn.
  • Some cold and frost sensitive species may be best planted during spring.

The society holds plant sales twice a year for members and the public - March and October.

There are usually about 600 different species, forms and cultivars for sale.

These include plants not available at nurseries and other retail outlets, as well as many plants which are local in origin.

You can look up your plants in the online Plant Label Database.

In spring, you can plant many different types of plants, including those which need the summer growth to establish before the onset of Canberra winter, ie some cold and frost sensitive plants.

  • Spring sunlight is quite intense, so select plants which are dark green in colour and sturdy growth.
  • Plants can lose water quickly in a couple of sunny days. Watering regularly spring/summer planted plants in the garden is critical this time of the year.
  • ANPS expect about 13,000 plants for the 20th October 2018 spring sale.

Spring sale includes some plants not available in autumn

  • Some cold sensitive plants are best planted in spring
  • When well hardened-off plants are used with adequate watering over warmer (and very hot! periods), these plants establish better when planted in spring.
